I am passionate about making a change in my family and in my community. When asked why I chose climate change as my platform at my Leadership NH search committee interview, I stated that “climate change is the most serious environmental issue of our time. Many people are still not willing to admit that the consequences of not acting, and changing how we treat the earth, will have serious repercussions.” Because of this, I have dedicated my time to being part of the climate change revolution taking place in my community and state.
I believe strongly that change starts with each and every one of us. For many years my family contributed to the problem like so many of my neighbors and members of the community. During a seven-month cross country trip I took with my family in 2014, I witnessed firsthand the effect our lack of mitigation is having on the land – from poor farming practices and drought conditions in the west, which have increased since our return, flooding in the south west – to strange weather patterns throughout the U.S.
Since our return in April 2015, I have dedicated myself to furthering my education about the environment, natural resources, land stewardship, soils, gardening, wildlife habitat restoration, permaculture, grant writing, leadership outreach and community conservation. In addition, my family has taken positive steps towards decreasing our environmental footprint with the goal of teaching others around us. We have started composting, vermicomposting, hydroponic gardens, raising poultry, increasing our knowledge of recycling, and we had a 40’ solar array constructed in our backyard. In addition, I have created a permaculture design and plan for our home and land in an effort to conserve natural resources and live sustainably.
My strong desire to make a change starts in my own community of Barrington, NH. My volunteer work with the local elementary school is an effort that involves not only the students, teachers and parents, but the community as a whole. I secured three grants for the school and I am helping them to achieve eco-school status through the National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools USA program. Our partner, NH Audubon, has been guiding us on our journey to establish vegetable and pollinator gardens at the school. In addition, we are looking at raising chickens and composting in 2016.
ChangeStartsWithMe.org shares my ideas about making change happen and how each and every one of us can make a difference. When we hear the news or read the latest updates on social media, we often become overwhelmed with all that is happening around us. Because of this, we may decide to tune out or disconnect – that will not make the problems go away – it will only silence them for a short period of time. Join the Change Starts With Me revolution. Working together, we will rebuild our families and communities one change at a time!
