Fernando Madeira was born in Portugal, Lisbon, on the 5th September 1979. At the age of 7, moves to Macau where he concludes the secundary scholarship. Returns to Portugal at the age of 18, where he studies Territorial and Urban Planning Arquitecture. Concludes the 1st year and the drawing course at the Fine Arts Society. Unsatisfied with the educational system and the perspectives of work in an european reality where he didn´t identified himself, at the age of 21 he decides to go back to Macau searching new chalenges. For the next 7 years, he works as a photojournalist and freelance photographer. At the same period he travel´s to several places is Asia, including the passionating Timor-Leste.
The will to contribute for a more fair and sustainable future takes him to do an intensive permaculture design course in Chiang Mai, Thailand, organized by Panya project. From there on, he creates an urban demonstrative site on sustainable practices at his house rooftop, an open space for schools, visits and gatherings. In Cambodia he performs a small action of Introduction to Permaculture with the presence of local farmers. On July 2008 becames a co-founder member of naTerra´s Association in Macau, dedicated to the Education of Sustainable development, being part of the creation of "Raio de Sol" project to be implemented in Timor-Leste. Still in 2008, becames the co-founder member of Borderless Arts Association in Macau, promoting local artists expression and the cultural exchange between countries. Still in Macau, organizes an urban permaculture workshop, using his house rooftop as a demonstrative example.
Visits several projects in the sustainability scope, highlighting a biodynamic agriculture workshop. In the beggining of 2009 he participates on the intensive Ecovilage Design Education course and Trainee of Trainers organized by Wong Sanit Ashram in Thailand, promoted by Gaia Education.
Then he goes to East Timor, in the end of March. From there on he has been doing part of the coordination and implementation of the “Raio de Sol” Project – creation of a learning center for sustainAbility. Here, 2 demonstrative permaculture sites are stablished. An educational and demonstrative site on urban permaculture and a learning and research site on rural permaculture combined with a community fruit tree nursery.
By the end of 2009, develops his interest in the area of holistic education and does a training on Artistic Therapies and Introduction to Antroposophy in Singapure with Linda Hall from Art Beat ltd.
Coordinates an educational and research permaculture center on a 9 hectares farm in Mindoro island - Philippines for 2 years (2011-2013). In the same island is developing a future permaculture healing center and eco-tourism settlement.
On March 2012 he attends an "urban" permaculture design certificate course with Steve Cran in Hong Kong, China. Late 2012 attends a permaculture teachers training course with Rosemary Morrow in Hong Kong, followed by a presentation on the first South East-Asian Bioregional Permaculture Convergence, both in Hong Kong – China.
