About Raymond De Santis

I claim no direct permaculture certifications or experience. However, my wife Esperanza has an Agronomy degree, and we have a plan that needs to be worked out. My land use strategies come from travelling around and eventually earning a Regional Planning degree.

Through grit, grind, and speculation we have acquired five pieces of land in Colombia where Esperanza was born and raised. About 7 degrees above the equator water has not been an issue, but dry periods keep us alert to the cycles. Our intention is to settle the properties in 2023 and do what we can with what we have where we are.

A little blurb about what's on our adult minds. As in any discipline, permaculture has no shortage of utopian ideals that will eventually drop into the universal trash can for utopian ideals. Unfortunately, like earlier environmentalists and other philosophers who could arguably be considered spot on, humanity will just stop doing permie books, pods, and videos. Yup, move on they will because just as there is no perfect farm there is no perfect way. It gets a bit maddening when quite reasonable people conclude "we" must do x to accomplish y. And, the x will cost $57.95 + shipping.

So, indeed, we have neither the desire nor mojo to keep pace with perfect permaculture. Our intent is to simply use permaculture and partner with nature to let that marvelous equatorial climate do its thing. A whole lot of observation and conversation seasoned with less is more. We hope to enjoy the sights and sounds as long as possible but understand the "future" of our lands may very well be relegated to drone parking by some forward thinking ruralist. Damn.

Like everyone else engaged in land use, we have no time to communicate with all the people we would like to communicate with. Our understanding finds an unfortunate and similar correlation between Real Organic Project growers and PDC graduates. The growers have no shelving space in the markets and the graduates have no money to buy land and practice. Tons of product and talent turning to spoils. Then, our unpublished utopian urgency is to grantawaysomelandandprosper. Unsettled permies full of vim and vigor can have their way with our land and get paid. Keeps some of y'all from discouragement and keeps us active. We hope to start conversations with kindred souls already living in Colombia or those willing to give the place a try. Later.
