How to make the best espresso

If you’re a coffee lover, you must have definitely heard of espresso. A shot of espresso isn’t just in and of itself good, but when mixed with milk, it tastes heaven. From what are the top rated coffee grinders  for espresso, to how to froth your milk, this article lays them down in small steps. So why don’t we dive a little more into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to make a yummy shot of espresso?

Good coffee beans

Any experts would tell you that you cannot make a good espresso without good beans. Espresso is often made from dark roasted because they yield stronger flavour, but you don’t necessarily have to stick to the rule if you don’t want to. Whether you like a stronger or lighter taste, choose the according level of roast.

One thing is important, though: fresh is better. Coffee ground is best if brewed within a few days after roast so as to relinquish all of its flavours and aromas. It is, nonetheless, not recommended to brew immediately after roast because this interferes with the beans’ off-gassing process.

Grind your coffee finely

Espresso requires finer grind than any other types, so make sure you’ve got the best burr coffee grinders that you can find. Burr grinders are more powerful than blade, therefore more suitable for grinding highly fine coffee like espresso. To give you an illustration, espresso ground should only be a little coarser than sand. Yes, it is that small. And make sure you grind them consistently, otherwise you’ll taste both over-extracted and under-extracted coffee in your cup.

Water is important

The next step to choosing  good coffee grinder is controlling the ground-to-hot water ratio. This is recommended to be around 1:2, since espresso is already a concentrated drink. This results in the standard brewing time of about 25-30 seconds, more or less than that risk your espresso tasting bland or too strong.

What’s more, the water needs to be the exact temperature-- about 195 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler or hotter water might under or over-extract the drink. As you have already seen, it’s all about control and balance.

Froth your milk

If you’re someone like me, then you’ll understand the importance of that fatty flavour of milk in a cup of coffee. Unless you’re a full-on black coffee person, you’ll know that almost all types of coffee are mixed with some amount of milk.

The best espresso machine usually comes with a powerful steam wand that will give your milk that buttery taste and that velvety look. For beginners, a good steam wand is powerful enough so you won’t have to twirl things around with your own hands, and knows to adjust its temperature so that you won’t oversteam your milk. Among others, the Breville Bambino Plus has the most powerful wand that lets you steam your milk with ease.

The different kinds of drinks

There are a multitude of drinks with an espresso base that you can easily try at home. For  more diluted options, latte and flat-white come first on the list because of their high milk-to-coffee ratio: 4:1 in the former and 3:1 in the latter. For a stronger taste, cappuccino, americano and red-eye respectively come in to awaken your palate because of their concentrated coffee content.

No matter what the various reviews tell you, it all depends on your preference on what makes a good shot of espresso. With the above steps, we hope that we’ve satisfied some pigments of your curiosity.
