(projects i'm involved in)
I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT in a gardening family that loved their Miracle Grow. I have a Master's Degree (2012) in Teaching, 12-18+year olds, Environmental Science and Biology and a Bachelor of Arts (2009) in Environmental Studies with a minor in Consciousness. I brewed beer professionally for about 4 years in the Puget Sound of WA state before coming to Permaculture. I started landscaping when I was 13, and gardening organically when I was 17.
I moved back to Salt Lake City after completing my BA at Evergreen in Olympia, WA and starting experimenting in the garden that my Dad and I kept together; at about the same time I found a read (and re-read!) Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden, which catalyzed a huge change of path for me. I learned a lot about Dutch White Clover, compost, and guilds that first year, tinkering with Biodynamics as well, while I also realized that I had been unintentionally "doing Permaculture" for a long time. I fell in love with plants all over again with a fresh eye on the complexity and sheer "magic" that happens in the garden and larger ecosystems.
My work is currently with my Permaculture-based landscape company, Heart of Green Ecological Services, in Spokane, WA, and as President of the Board of Directors of a 32-acre educational farm nearby, Pine Meadow Farm Center . I consider my work first and foremost a deepening of connections, forging new relationships, and strengthening old ones; I love to help people tap into the spirit of plants. I am constantly refining my relationships with plants and seeking to communicate more deeply with them. I am also currently teaching workshops on a variety of topics, mostly dealing with how to live more in tune with the Earth and make wise and well thought out impacts. I will be completing my first PDC this July.
I am thrilled to begin a deliberate fusion of my education and environmental-teaching backgrounds with my passion for permaculture design. I am currently working on the beginnings of an ecovillage and small farm business design with a couple close friends, in Western WA state where I hope to one day offer advanced Permaculture trainings for the community. I am always excited to meet new people and network resources and skills. Please contact me if you would like more information, or to introduce yourself.
