My NGO is starting a permaculture project at the Samuel Johnson middle school in a rural town called Zastron - near Lesotho, in the eastern Free State. It is an incredibly poor area, with high mortality, extreme weather conditions and little hope.
The purpose is to feed the children; teach the teachers how to use a garden as a teaching tool; teach the final year students to grow their own food and understand resource conservation (among other things) and become a centre for promoting permaculture in the region.
We are also building new classrooms from sandbags, have installed dry composting toilets and an irrigation system.
