After matriculating at the Constantia Waldorf School in Cape Town, I took part in a PDC offered by my sister Alex Kruger at the no longer extant Kommetjie Environmental Action Group, with Fulvio Grandin. I volunteered here in the demonstration and seed garden before going to Costa Rica to work on a Diane Firestone permaculture bamboo farm for 6 months, working with Will Elliot and becoming enamored with bamboo and coconuts.
After returning to South Africa and spending a number of years on and off studying anthropology and environmental and geographic science, I again attended a PDC. This time it was on Berg-en-Dal farm, again with Alex and Tahir Cooper. I also attended internships and volunteered on and off. Currently I am engaged in further research in a phd in Anthropology, looking at the permaculture movement as a response to global environmental problems amongst other things.
The anthropological research that I've been involved in has had a largely environmental focus - working with indigenous healers in arid desert areas, in urban shack settlements looking at greywater and municipal management, and now a focus on permaculture. Between spurts of work and study, I have learnt to teach yoga, spent many hours modelling in art classes, driving staff for fashion shoots and all the number of things one must do to survive. I have also worked on a part time basis with two permaculture organisations in South Africa, SEED and Food and Trees for Africa.
Between the various activities, life has taken on a distinctly gypsy flavour and I have no land or home of my own at this stage, and assist in gardens where and when I can.
Looking forward to connecting with the bigger permaculture world!
