The start of the fodder forest

Project: Permaculture Paddock Paradise

Posted by Petra Doerfling over 11 years ago

5 corms of Queensland Arrowroot went into the ground today, and the scarified Tagasaste seeds got put into pots.

Yesterday I got my parcel from GreenHarvest containing my much awaited Comfrey roots, Queensland Arrowroot corms, and Ginger roots.

The Arrowroot corms went into various spots around the garden, and although maybe a bit hap hazard in my planting there is reason to my madness. They went into different soils as there were no instructions on exactly what type of soil they liked, just that they are hardy and to best in subtropical and tropical climates, so... I am taking my chances. Lets see where they come up first.

The comfrey root cuttings will have to wait until tomorrow. They are going into the old wheelbarrow, but I have to fill it with some growing material first. It'll be store bought  potting mix for now, because I have nothing else yet, but once the worm farm is hoofing and I am getting plenty of compost, then things will change.

2 days ago I scarified 20 Tagasaste seeds, but only put them into the seedling mix today. they were sitting on moist kitchen towel and had swollen quite nicely. I cut up some 600ml milk bottles, you know the ones iced coffee comes in, cut holes in the bottom and mixed my sandy loam with some aged horse poo, and put the seeds in there... I went crazy. 5 seeds to each pot. 5 seeds didn't swell so they went into the horse poo heap.

I also got my order from Eden Seeds and the Pidgeon Peas are tomorrows project. They are soaking until then and already have swollen markedly. Will be interesting to see it all happening.

I've got 4 days off next week, so the spot where I want to start the fooder forest will be prepared. The bathtub is filled with horse poo that is soaking in water. It's going to get drained and put to good use... which means I will dampen the soil with it once I've mattocked the the area. If you go to the description of the project... the small food forest triangle is first cab off the rank.

Wish me luck ;)

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
