An early Spring is a good time to get started again.

February.
More than 2 months have gone by since my last post. We haven't had any freezing in the last 2 weeks. Daytime pleasantly in the 70s F (15+ C) already. The roses are starting to sprout.
Winter has been unusually wet, with rain and snow throughout January (Normally only December) and there is a sheen of green in many places. The first flowers are starting to BLOOM already! (Pic1)

PERMACULTURE UPDATE:
Topmost part of swale 3 (Pic2) :
* widen to 2 1/2 ft, (Pic4)
* get horse manure (Pic5) and
* fill the swale with old horse manure. (Pic6+7)

Swale #3 is considerably smaller than the other swales because it's function is different. Primary purpose is water DISTRIBUTION, rather than water harvesting.

I use a lot of water for the ducks. A small ditch 3a (Pic3) carries the excess water into swale #3 where it gets distributed over a large area.
This keeps the duck pen clean and dry, while the water flow prevents mosquitoes from breeding in the duck pond.

The soil for swale 3 is an organic-poor sandy loam. Water sinks away within 24 hrs. The manure adds organic material that will function as a moisture reservoir. The top layer of the manure will dry out quickly in the Summer heat, but the deeper layers will remain moist for a long time. This moisture reservoir will allow several pioneer plants (cattail, sorghum, datura, desert willow, mimosa, mesquite, berries, ... ) to thrive throughout the Summer, independent of rainfall.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
