water well

Posted by simo devine almost 9 years ago

I have started to dig a 4×4 hole, and i am expecting to dig around 30ft. At this point i m around 6ft and due to the melting frost layer it seems to be filling up with water. My plan to overcome this is to get a sump pump to pump out the excesses water to allow me to continue digging.

To remove the clay/dirt/rocks from the well i devised a pully system with a  5 gal bucket; which is attached to a wooden structure that i made above the well. There are four 4x4 untreated post that i hammered around 2 ft into the ground. Each side has a 4×4 header and there is  a 4×4 beam going across the opening of the well hole.

As i did there is a crib that slides down with me to prevent cave in, it also provides me with something to build an "ladder" on to climb in and out. I have taken some safety precautions; i will have an air quality monitor to make sure the gas levels are safe for working conditions, if they are at dangerous levels the plan is to rig up a fan system to force freash air down or pull the dangerous gas out. While digging the well I will be wearing a harness that will be attached to a separate pully system. The harness is a secondary safty precaution if i am unable to climb out on my own.

I have had some small obstacles such as:

-digin through the frost barrier

-water removal

-large rocks

-getting in and out

The progress has been slow but i will keep it updated and possibly post pictures if i can figure it out

Eric Hammond : I support your efforts to dig a giant hole, there isn't anything quite like the success of a large hole. It took me 25 years to learn hole to dig a hole. May I suggest a large rock digging bar like

Rock digging bars are the ONLY way to dig!
