While I was watching a You Tube video showing seven examples of farms, and encouraging people to ‘leave there jobs’ to be farmers, some good advise was given on cattle: Pick a bull that produces smaller calves.
Instantly I had a flash back to my late teens, and a cold winter night.
Half way down a muddy hill in a small shelter design for the comfort of a few cows, and not the height of a person, is a cow in distress, trying to give birth to an over-sized calf. In mud with a rope, by the light of a kerosine lantern, I am helping my parents pull that calf from the cow…
The advise inspired me to research managing my future cattle births, with the intent of avoiding pulling calves in the future as far as possible, and planning to minimize the management of an abnormal birth.
