Year one has past

Posted by morten soefting over 8 years ago

We have now rounded the first year at our new home. It's been fun, a huge amount of work, some disapointments and a lot of experiencies. Our house is not yet finished but we hope and cross our fingers that we can move in before winter, otherwise we will have to stay in caravans and Yurds. Here is what did get done.

The forrest garden:
First step seem to be taking well. The ground is well covered with herbs, flowers and strawberries. Cabbage is doing amazing and we already had a few berries from the blueberries, blackcurrent, raspberries and gooseberries. Most of the trees survived and seems to be doing well. The Kiwi didn't take to well though. It might need a more sunny place. The first couple of months it was up hill. First of all our free range chickens kept finding holes in the fence, scratching up all the new seedlings and removing the groundcovers - so note to self: be tight on the fences. After that came the sluginvasion. What the chickens didn't destroy so did the slugs and ants. Even the ground elder was eaten all the way to the roots. We tried to introduce running ducks - but they ran away.... I then made some slugaile and spread it around. That did help a little bit, but in the end I removed the rest by hand over several weeks. Next year when everything is more settled I think the problem will be less. After all this is what is to be expected when you disturb and existing ecosystem.
Another thing we will do different next year is to use haystacks instead of tarp to cover up the ground. That way we can grow potatoes under the hay and get a production while we keep the weeds at bay.

The compost toilet is up and running. Pee has been distributed through out the garden and the dry stuff has been sitting for a year in the sun and will be spread out under the nut trees come spring.

The mandala garden will have to be remade. We didn't make the beds wide enough and I want to try and mix annuals with perennials on the sides for ground cover, soil structure and to help drive forward the annuals.

Next big project will be the building of our new rocketmassheater. There is a new design out that incl. a smoke washer. This will give a 125% output on the smoke and leave us with some super high grade furtilizer and practily clean, lukewarm air.
