Why Permaculture people should use Linux operating systems

Posted by Gurkan Yeniceri over 7 years ago

In permaculture world we are bound by the 12 principles. When it comes to choice of operating system in your laptop which you use for presentations and update your blog, you should use Linux. I will explain why.

Linux is born as an answer to paid operating systems. There is copyright and there is copyleft. The idea behind the Linux is to provide an open source operating system so that people can have an alternative to paid operating systems. Its source code is also available to browse, contribute etc.

It is the only truly sustainable operating system which is developed by the funs of this ecosystem. It is free, you don’t have to pay for it. You can download and use a lot of open source applications free of charge. There is always an equivalent application to your beloved/hated Office, Edge, Safari, AutoCad, 3DSMax etc.

I think the most unsustainable OS is Apple’s cats. It runs on specific hardware, you have to pay for new versions and credit card is required to use simple things.

Next is the Windozzz, still you need to buy a license but torrents would give you a usable copy. New versions come with a llicense fee. Oh also doesn’t work all the time.

On Linux, upgrades happen without paying whether a new version or a fix. Apps repository is full of useful productivity tools for free. Open Source applications are so mature that many corporations are actually using them.  Number of viruses are also significantly lower in Linux world, most not causing headache.

Any operating system is vulnerable to attacks, viruses and malware though, this is a fact. Follow these steps to make your Ubuntu Secure https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BasicSecurity
