Mongeal Mapu - Tierra para la Vida - Land for Life

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Intentional Communities, Community

Project Summary

Restore the land degraded and partly eroded by over-grazing by sheep, horses and goats over 40 years. Build a food forest, increase native forest and build low energy buildings. Later to have PDC courses. All done as an expression of non-ritualistic mindful living/meditation in line with the Buddha's teaching. There will be no Buddha images or Buddhist ritual. Practice of Dhamma (Truth) and Buddhism are not the same thing. Buddhism is a centrally organised religion with dogma and control, like any other religion. Truth belongs to no one person or group.

Project Description

22ha ~54acres of land has been committed for permaculture design and implementation. The northern half has been donated for a meditation centre teaching the practice of non-ritualistic mindfulness of breathing and as a Permaculture demonstration and education site. The southern half has been put aside for private for-profit development.

The land has three springs and is at an elevation of 630-730m. The land is about 50km from the sea and about 70km from the Andes with and east aspect.

Legal status as a charitable, not for profit organisation is being sought.

This is to be a centre for contemplative living, teaching mindful joyful and simple living; mindfulness of the breath as taught by the Buddha (MN 118) will be the main focus. This teaching covers the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (MN 10), which is taught to be Insight meditation by major Buddhist traditions.

People can come to stay for the application of mindful living as taught by the Buddha, or Permaculture, or both.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
