Project Summary

East Ft Worth Montessori Academy focuses on Outdoor Learning Education through teaching children, their parents, the community, and the staff and administration about the possibilities and opportunities within nature.

Project Description

The Outdoor Learning Environment at East Ft Worth Montessori Academy (EFWMA) consists of a Rose Garden, a Butterfly garden, a small Pond, a walking Labyrinth, and a community garden.

Plans are being made to expand the gardens to the front of the school (which is a little over an acre), and showing exmaples of various techniques and methods that continually attempt to work with nature and the environment.

Community Dynamics

The People - Parents and children are mainly at-risk, low income and socially disadvantaged. The school is located in a food desert and most of the children (more than 50%) are on a free and reduced lunch. Parents do see value in the education there; however, there is not as active participation at the moment at the school or in the children's education.

The Environment: Domesticated chickens, goats and rabbits are there for educational purposes. There is a wealth of insect activity and animal activity due to the proximity to the surrounding landscape and nature preserves.

Soil and Mineral Cycles

Soil is capped in many areas, and irrigated watering of plants has been the norm for many years. Compost has been used for the tennis ball court community garden, but few plants have been fully established and the soil has compacted from student activity. Animals are present (chickens, goats, and rabbits). Plans are being made to integrate the chickens and goats into the gardens and surrounding landscapes to improve soil, mineral, and water cycles.

Energy Flow

Plant proximity has not been fully established in most areas of the school. There is a wealth of life on the eastern side of the school and the life to the south of the school before the dam has been removed due to city disruption of the environment. Plans are being made to re-establish a habitat for insects, animals, and other wildlife.

Water Cycle

Thousands of gallons of water fall off of the roof and the hill to the south of the school towards the butterfly, rose, labyrinth, and pond gardens. Many areas get flooded and soil erosion is evident on the hillsides. Rainfall that exceeds 3 inches will result in pooling in certain areas for days. Plans are to re-establish soil and integrate animals to improve the water and mineral cycles.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
