About Faan Rossouw

I was introduced to the term ‘permaculture’ in 2009 after a 1st year lecturer of mine told us about Fukuoka’s ‘One Straw Revolution’. Set off on an autodidactic path with extreme zeal, I spent many months watching everything from Geoff Lawton’s DVDs to youtube video tours of permie gardens and reading blogs, books and just about anything related to the subject.

In mid-2010, after what I deemed sufficient theoretical entrainment relating to the field, I joined two friends in transforming a 1ha vacant lot in Jamestown, South Africa into a bona fide permaculture fruit forest with about 100 trees and circa 200 different plant species including edible, culinary, medicinal and support species.

The space has been developed not only to hone our skills by practical application and to provide us with abundant produce for the future, but also as a kind of "open source culture" project where we co-operate with anyone who wishes to partake in a collaboration that resonates within the common ecological and ethical parameters as set by us, the designers.

Needless to say, since I have become involved with this project my life has completely been entrained within this discipline. It has also provided me with amazing connections and opportunities to explore subjects as diverse as raw food nutrition, yoga, shamanism, ethnobotany, earthworks, Toltec, indigineous knowledge, mycology, Gaea remediation, system's theory, sustainable food production, seed saving, soil building and taxonomy.

In late 2011 I graduated with my degree in BSc: Ecology from Stellenbosch University and in January 2012 I have been incredibly privy to do my PDC and a 10-week internship (including courses in Earthworks, Aid, Soil Biology, Urban gardening and Teacher training) under the tutelage of the esteemed Geoff Lawton on Zaytuna Farm, NSW, Australia.
