MIGUEL AFONSO

FOUNDER, URBAN FARM GURU, INC.

Growing up in Botswana in the Kalahari desert, Miguel Afonso forged a deep appreciation for plants, animals and for the sacredness of water at an early age. After obtaining a social science degree at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Miguel’s wanderlust got the better of him. During his travels Miguel became keenly interested in all things green and sustainable and participated on the boards of non profits and volunteered his time for various events and projects. Upon settling in South Florida that Miguel began to turn his attentions to gardening and permaculture. Keenly aware of the the impending problems we could face in the future, he has dedicated himself to teaching permaculture design, aquaponics and all things urban farming. As a certified Permaculture Designer, Miguel is intent upon weaving life and biological security into the urban landscape one project at a time. Miguel is also currently serving as a founding board member at the non-profit community garden, The Fruitful Field. Miguel is also the founder of URBAN FARM GURU, INC, a for profit urban Permaculture landscape and consultancy business. Miguel also assists his community in his capacity as a master gardener, by providing free educational lectures, assisting community gardens and schools in South Florida.
