After getting my BA in Biology and Teaching, I followed my passion for connecting people with nature by training in nature-based mentoring, experiential teaching methods, and cultural regeneration at the WIlderness Awareness School in Washington State, US.
I completed my PDC with Toby Hemenway in 2011 and Teacher Training with Rosemary Morrow in 2013. I've worked at Vale da Lama since 2013, organizing, facilitating, and co-ordinating learning experiences in Permaculture and Nature Connection for both children and adults.
The focus of my work is to offer experiences in nature and understanding of ecology to bring people an experience of belonging, of our place and purpose on the planet as positive agents of regeneration. My goal as an educational designer is to create learning environments and use experiential, sensory, and participatory teaching methods to generate in-depth, transformative learning experiences.
Since 2017 I co-own a 4-hectare forested mountain property in the Balsa Neighborhood of Monchique with my partner and son. After organizing and co-teaching a PDC for the neighbors, we have developed together a design for water management, fire risk reduction, and wildlife areas/corridors for 7 properties (a total of 16 hectares). While respecting each family's autonomy on their property, we are all working to regenerate a healthy forest - a very urgent mission after an intense wildfire in the summer of 2018 burned all our lands.
The vision that motivates us is to create an example of a resilient, diverse, and healthy forest and social system in the abandoned interior of Portugal, that can regenerate the ecology despite global warming and the wildfires that it brings. We hope our story inspires others to become caretakers of burned lands or those at high risk of wildfire, so that Portugal's forests are not left abandoned to Eucalyptus monoculture and human desertification.
