About Kristy Trione

Kristy, with her husband David began their permaculture journey in the Amazon in 2009, on a trip with the Pachamama Alliance. Witnessing the destruction of people and the lungs of the planet, they made a promise to the Achuar hosts to go back to help change the nightmare dream of the modern world. Back home, near Seattle, they helped establish Transition Snoqualmie Valley. Kristy, with her connections and work in community educational, governmental, and health systems, helped organize events and activities; most notably a "New Livelihoods Job Fair"- sort of like a communiversity in a day.
In 2012, the couple explored the possibility of investing in land in Costa Rica, and fell in love with a 33 acre dairy farm, degraded, eroded, but green, clean, and beautiful. Faster than they imagined, the couple re-located, applied for residency, and began practicing permaculture by building a demonstration site.
For six years, Patos Suertudos hosted work-exchange visitors through from around the globe: more than 130 from 26 countries to help establish food, medicinal and wood forests. Kristy was the head organizer, host, and teacher in the little mom and pop operation.
In 2018, after awarding 20 Permaculture Design Course certificates to outstanding volunteers demonstrating deep knowledge of the ethics and principles of permaculture, Patos Suertudos is shifting into a more financially stable model by offering educational courses and permaculture-style eco-tourism.
To kick off the new year and new model, Patos Suertudos is hosting a medicinal plant workshop, with Ed Bernhardt of the New Dawn Center, author of Medicinal Plants of Costa Rica. Ed has been Kristy and David's Permaculture instructor and mentor. His guide on Organic Gardening in Costa Rica a reference used in establishing sustainable food systems in these rainy tropics.
