I am the CEO and founder of a Grenadian NGO/NPO, People in Action, www.piagrenada.org. Our agency was recently funded by the EU to host the very first PDC in Grenada. Our PDC instructors were Erle Noronha and John Stollmeyer of Caribbean Permaculture Consultants, from the neighboring island of Trinidad. I first toured both Erle and John's project in 2010 at a regional environmental conference and vowed to bring them in as soon as funding was available. The communities interest was further enticed by the documentary "The Power of Community: How Cuba overcame the peak oil crisis".
They were able to certify 17 persons from local communities, HM Prison, the Marketing National Importing Board and NGOs. As a requirement of the EU funding, the graduates of the PDC are required to work in 3 teams to design farms & yards for 6 beneficiaries of the MDGs Food Security for the Poor. The participants all realized that permaculture was not a world away from their traditional living that most had turned away from in some cases or losing.
At present 5 communities are interested on a permaculture design for their communities. We see real potential for using PDC in Community tourism design. Our aim as an agency is to see as many communities as possible adopt Permaculture Design. Our vision is Grenada's sustainable development by permaculture design.
