Hugelculture Beds

My hugelculture beds, put in this past fall/spring have been fantastic!

Since my project is, for the moment, mostly done in regards to the primary elements, I'll post updates as to how those elements are doing as well as a bit about when/how/why/where they were put in.

So, I'll start with the most recent and work my way back. The hugelculture beds in my kitchen garden were just put in this past fall and spring. I started with a layer of old firewood that had a bit of rot as well as logs from around the place. The beds were stacked to about 2 feet then a layer of fall leaves and grass clippings were pushed into the gaps then a layer of chicken coop straw bedding full of manure was applied in late fall early spring. Finally a couple of inches of soil was mixed into the mostly decomposed/composted straw.

The beds were planted with lettuce, kale, chard, spinach and radishes in the spring. Then we had lots and lots of rain, 21 inches in 10 days! While most folks in the area had gardens sitting in standing water the hugelculture beds performed perfectly. Absorbing water but also draining well. In May I planted peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant and all are doing well.

Thus far the beds have performed better than expected and I couldn't be happier!

Nicole Brammy : Hey I am very curious to try these. How do you think they would go in a dry climate? (I live on a sand hill in coastal south australia - the climate similar to northern california)

	Consultant The individual with this badge is indicating they are, have, or would like to do paid permaculture design consultancy work. As such, the individual may or may not have permaculture consultancy experience. Watch their updates for evaluation.
	Community Project Community projects are projects that help develop sustainable community interaction and increase localised resiliency.
