A case of stacking

Posted by PHIL FOGGITT about 13 years ago

Growing vegetables around and up a pear tree

I had a surplus of bean seedlings towards the end of the sowing season this year. I also had squash seedlings looking for homes. This feature (see illustration) was made using pallet slats screwed together to form a triangular raised bed about 1' wide, around the base of a pear tree. The bed also acts as a "mulch", preventing grass ingress. Both the squash and climbing french beans climb up into the branches of the tree. Chicory and basil seedlings were also planted in the bed.
