Project: Towards Balcony Sustainability Despite Restrictions on Permanence

Posted by James R. Diegel over 12 years ago

June update 2012

This past couple of months has been an eye opening experience.  I have in fact learned a lot from my experiments.  In addition I have really embraced the idea of upcycling and found in the city that wonders can come of that which others deem unworthy to use - mostly in the form of finding containers to plant things in.  In the end I find it interesting that in almost every case a new addition turned to be just the missing piece of the puzzle that was needed to revamp or fill a space that although was good, is much better due to the upcycling.  I have also begun the work of planning for a more vertical approach and have utilized some restrictions in a sense to work in plans for climbing nets and potential greenhouse spaces in the winter months.  Still pondering ideas for water capture and nutrient reuse and have had some success with the creation of self watering planters out of old ones that I had lying around.  The next step I believe is to redo the floor in some kind of combination grass and stone - the grass as a cooling effect and hopeful ease to be able to roll it up when it needs to be removed down the road as well as water cleansing and trapment and the stone tile in order to utilize the reflective potential of the light on the inner walls and ceiling.  For photos of the updates and progress please do check out the Google plus photo blog in the following link (https://plus.google.com/photos/109142908980994394956/albums/5742681295791509793?hl=en-US).

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
