Top Bar Bee Hive Maintenance

Project: No Small Dreams

Posted by Tim Auld about 13 years ago

Nine days after migrating the bees into their new hive and location, I opened up the hive to inspect their progress and give them some more space.

Through the week the bees appeared to be happily going about their business, flying out and returning with legs loaded with pollen. I was eager to see what they had done!

I was in for a treat - they were successfully building comb down from the two outside top bars that I had made available for them.

Their numbers seemed healthy, but I did see one small hive beetle. There were 7 dead beetles in the trap, 3 bees, lots of ants, a few flies and one moth larvae!

I gave them 3 new top bars to build from, which should last them a while, and opened up the remaining two entrances.

Mark Brown : Exciting stuff Tim. Will you leave the adapted frame in or remove it at some point? Do you start them with wax in a slot in the top bar?

Tim Auld : Hi Mark, good question! I want to get a Langstroth hive too, to gain experience, compare the differences, and split colonies off to sell with Lang hives. What I might do is keep the nursery frames in the top bar and transfer them across to populate the Lang when I get it and the top bar hive can take the loss. Basically the reverse of what I just did. Eventually I will remove the nursery frames and keep them handy in case I ever want to do a transfer either way. We put a wax foundation in the nursery frames, cut to size.

Vanessa - yes, will definitely catch up with you and chat about this sometime soon!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
