Because I wanted to preserve all the trees I could on our ten acre project, I was unsure just how to incorporate earthworks into the design. Then I observed something that gave me a pattern to work from. Whenever it rains very hard (only always) the humus runs out of the forest duff and is carried down the sandy lane that runs through the upper portion of the project. Wherever a stick or other obstacle impedes the flow of the runoff, however, the humus builds up and forms a dam. Water builds up behind the dam and runs around the sides, only to be caught up again in the next tiny swale and berm. A regular fish-scale patter is created. Grass grows in these accumulations so that when it rains again more of the system is built up. My lane looks like a pattern of fishscales made of tiny new grass sprouts growning in dark, rich humus. What better pattern is there than this. I see the trees in those tiny sprouts of grass and I have a model for earthworks that will work naturally.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
