Project Summary

Seghersecoplant is a compagny that builds natural waterpurification systems and is supported by a nursery of 60 different plants with high purifying potential. At present the owner has opened a hotel in Uganda and is trying the work out his systems in the subtropical. The compagny is now only running on maintaining existing systems.(Raf Seghers had till now to much resistance in Belgium to fully work out his ideas and projects)

Project Description

By growing and training ourselfes the plants in a very different way (Lokateiner way of growing), you maximize the purifying capacities of these specific plants. The concept is very simple. We use little lava rock as a substrate and catch for example rainwater that runs trew the substrate. The substrate contains certain plants in a certain following order. When the water fully passed the box with substrate and plants it is purified. Ofcourse their is a lot more to it.  The actual purification of water is a symbiotic alliance between the roots of that plant(mostly roots that transport oxygen) and the bacteria living on the roots. This enabled us to build systems to purify rainwater to healthy drinking water and purify black .and grey water to reusable water. Also Raf put up a system for a fotolab to purify the silver they were using out of their water. This system wasn't perfect yet but had a lot of potential. Natural cooling projects by green roofs combined to purifying the grey and black water was done to for example in Portugal on a cider making compagny. This was done by using selfmade floating plant islands. Very interesting.

Raf Seghers tryed to work out his ideas and systems but also found a lot of restistance in doing so. Mainly because of people not being ready for something as good and useful and the watercompagny that is playing a solo game in Belgium. That compagny(Aquafin ) went broke couple of years ago because of failure but was bought up by Belgium governement. I must say since last year they managed threw mechanical systems to bring our water to european standard quality and fish is coming back to riversystems like the Schelde that is the biggest river in Belgium. Ten years ago there wasn't any fish left in the Schelde so when there back fish we have to call it a good thing to ofcourse.

Because of this resistance Raf started desinging and building natural swimming pools in means to survive with his compagny. He always gave his best but his work and ideas weren't always appreciated. Anyway , after 15years of idealism in Belgium he saw his chance in bying a property in Uganda and builded up a ecohotel in Uganda. It was always his wife her dream to live in Africa and do some good there. They only employ local people for their business and are doing a lot of permaculture/socials projects within the local environment together with the locals. In the mean time Raf is trying to work out his ideas about natural waterpurification in the subtropical. Back home Raf his stepson is maintaining excisting systems so the compagny still survives.

I personally will always believe that there will be a part for plants and their purifying capacities to play in changing to a localized substainable and healthy way of living for all!!!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
