As an attempt to live a self-sustainable life in a city, I've begun with trying to grow my own food on my terrace. A few experiments have been conducted in the last one year, and I've gradually moved to using bamboo baskets instead of plastic pots as containers, sourcing and saving organic open pollinated seeds, using a lot of leaf mulch instead of ready-made potted mix, and creating vermi-compost on my terrace.
With no background in farming, I have gradually observed and learnt by experimenting, and also from books and some short workshops. I completed my Permaculture Design Course from Auroville, India, in Feb 2012 with Bernard Alonso as my teacher. I plan to implement the learnings in a few social projects to develop kitchen gardens and community supported agriculture projects. Also, I'm keen to implement the learning of permaculture design in an urban setting, and encourage others to grow their own food by setting an example myself.
