I live in a village that is on a peninsula which has garnered a reputation as a vacation destination, Door County, Wisconsin.
I am part owner of a little hands-on, old fashioned bakery called Sweetie Pies. My wife and I are part of the original team that formed a sustainability organization in our county called Sustain Door which is inspired by the Natural Step organization out of Sweden.
We live on a little 5.5 acre parcel that was the farmstead for vegetable gardens for the restaurants that operated in the 1870's into the 1920's for a clientele that came in mostly by boats plying Lake Michigan, before the road system took over. The parcel is bordered by Fish Creek, the villages namesake, and is mostly overgrown now with stands of pine, cedar, ash and maple with some meadow land with some spectacular wildflowers, yellow lady slippers, cardinal flower and blazing star, in amongst a great deal of rampant juniper.
We hope to establish a permaculture project here. I am scheduled to take my PDC classes this March with Midwest Permaculture, Bill and Becky Wilson of Stelle, Illinois.
Wish us luck!
