About Michael Jacobsen

Homeschooled throughout my youth, I spent most of my childhood outdoors, developing a life-long love of nature. I also spent much of my childhood tearing apart whatever electronics I could get my hands on and had the desire to be an inventor. From there it was a whirlwind of school, college for Massage Therapy (long story), self-tutoring in Web Design (specializing in web interface design), marriage, kids, etc. I never lost my love of nature, though it got buried for a long time.

I discovered Permaculture in 2010. I had gotten an interest in the survivalist/prepper movement and saw the term pop up a couple times as something "better than gardening". I looked the term up on Wikipedia and followed an odd trail through the internet that ended up dumping me on Youtube staring at a video of Geoff "Greening the Desert". I got so excited watching this video that I ended up watching it 5 times. From there I fell down the permaculture "rabbit hole". I bought books and watched countless videos. I ended up hunting for a PDC near me but always coming up fruitless. The only place close to me was 2 hours drive away, lasted several weekends for a couple months, costed more than I had to invest, and would have taken me away from my family for far too much time. Fortunately I stumbled upon Geoff's first Online PDC just as he was starting to promote it.

Now, as a Certified Permaculture Designer, I'm presently working on developing a number of business models suited to my local area. I'm going to have to do a lot of "awareness" work as the word permaculture draws nothing but blank stares where I am located, if not open hostility as "green" is widely considered a four letter word around here. I also am interested in the Transition Town movement, though I admit to not having as much time to invest in researching it as I like... Yet...

Ultimately, I would like to move to a drylands setting. I wish to "Green a Desert". That's my passion and calling. Perhaps not now, but someday I will.
