I've always been fascinated by landscapes and people and the myriad of ways these two elements interact to create the world around us, in all of it's diverse guises.
After studying Geography, Business and The Environment at Uni in the UK, I spent most of the next 10 years working for a tour operator in South America, and all over the African continent, observing the world from behind the wheel of an overland truck. I was privileged to meet some amazing people and see first hand some of the hardship and struggle that is part of everyday life in a rapidly changing 'developing world'. Working in tourism in these places can create some tricky ethical dilemmas that I don't have time to go into on here...! But perhaps I can sum it up by saying that you often find the best of human nature in the most difficult and challenging places.
I first came across permaculture a few years ago WWOOFing in New Zealand and for the first time in my life, I felt that I'd stumbled across something that offered real solutions to the ecological, environmental and social problems we see in societies all over the world.
So...cut a long story short I've now moved to Tasmania with girlfriend and just completed an inspiring two week PDC at PRI Zaytuna and intend to throw myself head first into designing our 2.5 acre block just outside Kingston. I've got loads to learn, so I'm going to need some help, but plan to develop and share my skills and knowledge as I go. We intend to develop our place into an educational/ social hub where the local community can come to learn about permaculture and see the principles in action.
Clare is a yoga teacher too and we plan to eventually build a studio/teaching space with some accommodation as part of the long term design.
Once I have some experience under my belt I'd like to go into designing and helping setup other permaculture landscapes around Tassie and perhaps further afield.
