Last year an old work colleague and good friend mentioned the word Permaculture. I blinked and I missed it. It wasn't until I saw an episode of Gardening Australia where they were talking about Permaculture, Zones and Woofing when something clicked.
Then I discovered Geoff Lawton. Inspired by his videos, I was looking to take a PDC when I saw that Zaytuna was having an open day.
The trip down to Zaytuna was like a holy pilgrimmage to the promised land. A place to see Permaculture in action. A place to see in real life the things I had seen on videos. For them to be tangible and real. That wanting to live off grid, providing your own needs was a sane response to the post war industrialisation of food production and consumption.
I dragged my pregnant wife, the same Permaculture mentioning friend and his wife along on the ride with me. Its a shame that Zaytuna isn't a little closer, so I can duck over there like it was a trip to the local shops. It took a while to get there and the first thing I got to see was the rocket stove that I had only watched on a video several nights earlier.
After 5 years of renovations and a new baby, we are almost ready for the move North to the Sunshine Coast to embark on our next Permaculture adventure.
I'm glad Permaculture came back to me, because I sure hope that it never leaves.
