Established parts of my acreage

Posted by Linda Pinz-Valdez over 10 years ago

A list of already well established plants and trees on my land.
I have 60 different types of decidouose tree on my property and 20 conifers. The majority of the decidouose tree are Cottonwoods. I also have 2 black walnut, 4 apple, 2 plum, 1 cherry and 1 mulberry tree.. Most of my acreage is grass, I have 3 rubarb plants that are seeding this year and asparagus. Of these plants the mulberry, 1 crab apple and the asparagus came up voluntarily. We have hard winters here in South Dakota. This past year the wind chill got down to -50 below Fahrenheit (-46 degrees Celsius) averages are around -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 degrees Celsius). summer get up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). I have a mostly North/ northwest wind. With a less then 8 foot drop from the back of the property to the front. It is a slow drop that creates few drainage problems. There is some flooding in the spring with thaw and spring rains. We are a zone 4 here. I tell you all this in hopes of a better understanding as I explain my projects and seek advice.

Paul Kile : Linda, i am originally from the Black Hills area (So. Dak.) Spent a few years living in Vermillion while going to USD. How many acres do you have? I am developing a project in zone 3. Plan to start planting the chestnuts and pine nuts, apple rootstock in the spring 2014. Put in the zone 3 grape vines for rootstock this spring and plan to start propagating them next spring. What type off cherry tree do you have? Wild black? Have you started water conservation for the property to take advantage of your flooding season. Are you close to the river and/or live in a flood plain? So many questions. There is so much potential in So. Dak. that is not being tapped.

Keep us posted.
