Mini swales and mandala dug by hand

Posted by Amélie Langlois over 10 years ago

My 3 new local friends and I worked really hard on my first trip to Playa Bluff on August 2013.

We made 2 short and narrow swales and planted 5 fruit trees on each mound.

Then we managed to start a mandala garden with a banana circle in the middle and 3 keyholes. Quite hard job as this soil is pure clay!! I planted some ground cover and legumes to prepare the ground for next time!

In spite of the sweat and back ache this was such a pleasure to accomplish and the 3 workers, after being quite skeptical, started to appreciate and understand the patterns. What a wonderful week!

I'll be back in 3 months!

Alex Clifton
Alex Clifton : does your ground cover get planted near the newly planted fruit trees? are the chopped logs essential? are they only for added soakage?
