A community garden, or a community of gardens?

Posted by Bryan West over 13 years ago

After moving the vege garden to the front yard, and taking the lock off the gate, at last someone has decided to share the space.

About 4 years ago I decided that the place for gardening was where the site was most suitable.  For us, it is the front yard.

Another reason is because the front yard is the focal point, and since we live opposite a school, many people get to observe the rhythm of the seasons through the garden's changing faces.

About 4 years ago I decided that it would be great to share the garden, to share the space with some other people and families.

The Crop Circle grew from that concept, but members have still maintained very conservative boundaries between "mine" and "yours".

Well, until today that is.

Today I received a message:

I have a bit of an idea about my vege garden.....seeing as though I'm getting very fat now, don't have much energy, no help from husband!, need to organise things for when we go away, have a baby at the end of June,go away in August etc etc...I'm really going to struggle getting the whole shabang going. Do you think it might be a good project for us to have a colaborative garden (at your house) and we designate a time to come over and work each week. I'll bring as many helpers as I can!! Promise to put in my fair share of the work....what do you reckon?? You could have a real show piece by the end of it....We'll keep each other motivated....small scale community garden!

The fat bit refers to being 4 months pregnant.

And so the community of gardens grows.

4 years is not too long to nurture an idea.
