About Joshua Choate

I have had a life long interest in natural principles and law, and how they pertain to the way we live, the food we eat and things we build. I was strongly drawn to the permaculture movement when it hit my radar in 2010. I completed my PDC in 2011 under the mentorship of Jerome Osentowski and Peter Bane at Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute in Basalt, CO.

An entrepreneur at heart, I have largely been self employed throughout life. My first career (and business) was in the Information Technology industry. I worked in several areas which culminated in comprehensive systems design for business. Experience in understanding complexity and diversity in systems which must function reliably was a great advantage as I began my formal education in permaculture design.

I have owned and operated an organic market and yoga studio. I have professional experience in herbalism and wellness consulting. I have a passion for history, particularly those parts they didn't teach in school.

I am currently working on a multi-year permaculture design project, designing an 82 acre campus for Monticello College and establishing a permaculture institute for the same in Monticello, UT. I am a member of the faculty here as well.

Monticello College employs the Liber Education Model which combines Liberal Arts, Manual Arts, Humanities, Entrepreneurship and now, officially, Permaculture Design. Our four year undergrad program is unparalleled and developed through a permaculture design process. We also offer masters programs in Entrepreneurship and Natural Law. Graduates of our programs are well acquainted with everything from classical works and world history to growing food and alternative construction. Every graduate also completes a PDC design course and multi year internship working with systems on campus.
