I studied and worked as a Journalist for four years when I found the Permaculture Designers Manual in a second hand book store and was amazed and hooked. I headed over to Australia and did a PDC with Geoff Lawton in 1996 and then spent a year on Tagari, running a chicken tractor garden and an organic nursery.
I then came back to South Africa and restarted the sleeping SEED, which operates from the harsh Cape Flats and runs a national Outdoor Classroom Program. The school-based work seeks to connect children to the ecosystems that support them and fill tummies.
We are now growing the Rocklands Urban Abundance Centre in the Cape Flats, which integrates outdoor learning with community enterprise and skills development to harness community potential for transformation. The goal of the Centre is to function as an education hub, with practical demonstrations of innovation for alternative, green technologies and ways of living and for sustainable community-based green jobs.
