The Centre for Urban Agriculture in Alberta

Project Type

Urban, Residential, Demonstration, Educational, Permaculture Local Group Transition Town Permablitz, PRI Master Plan

Project Summary

The Centre for Urban Agriculture in Alberta aims to share the principles and techniques of permaculture, regenerative design, and urban homesteading while providing people with the means to grow and access fresh, chemical-free fruits, vegetables, and proteins at any time of the year.

Project Description

The Centre for Urban Agriculture in Alberta is an urban Permaculture Research Institute (certifying in 2016) that aims to share the principles and techniques of permaculture, regenerative design, and urban homesteading while providing people with the means to grow and access fresh, chemical-free fruits, vegetables, and proteins at any time of the year.

We teach people how to grow healthy and delicious food in their own yards and demonstrate that high yields and low maintenance can go hand in hand towards building local food security and food sovereignty.

We research and share the connections between food, land, and community well-being and nurture the human spirit through educational programs and public outreach in both urban and rural areas.

At our urban homestead (1/5-acre) we manage a food forest and SPIN-garden, dubbed "The Garden of Weedin'" and produce a vast variety of native fruits, vegetables, gourmet mushrooms, and culinary & medicinal herbs that are grown and tended to by ReThink Red Deer volunteers from all walks of life.

We support our local seasonal Farmers Markets from June through October as a vendor; supplying a general (eco)store called "The Root Cellar: ecoStore & Apothecary" that sells organic and eco-friendly products while serving as a small-scale seed exchange and apothecary for the community. As an official Permaculture Master Plan site we are researching urban permaculture technology to prototype a 4-season food growing and renewable-energy producing system called The Food Garage. We are also working towards research in alcohol fuel production which we plan to use in powering our generators and machinery - a process that creates organic fertilizer and pesticide/herbicide as a by-product!

We nourish central Alberta communities by supporting farm-to-school programs like Little Green Thumbs, community kitchens, preserving and gardening classes, special events, lectures, and permaculture and regenerative design courses and apprenticeships. We also provide outreach and consultation services to churches, schools and Community Associations throughout Central Alberta interested in urban agriculture.

We welcome you to help support a network of local food enthusiasts as we journey together to connect the many urban homestead projects, community gardens, markets and local economies in central Alberta.

The MEGGA-watt project moves forward

The "MEGGA-watt" Project (Micro-Energy Generating Garage Assembly) is a demonstration / prototype to turn everyday detached garages from simple storage units (aka 'car-holes') into food growing and energy-generating systems using permaculture design.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
