I came from a typical suburban, middle class background: video games, tv, processed food, sports, and generally no interest in the natural world. A spontaneous idea formed in middle of 2010 to travel around the country and work on organic farms(WWOOFing). That seed germinated for a few months until the end of 2010, whence the journey began. For about 8 months, I spent time with a couple budding permaculturists(one in Dade City, FL and one in Fairfield, IA) who completed changed my paradigm in life.
I learned quite a bit from these guys and the 4 WWOOF farms I worked on, all showing me different faces of the agricultural world. In the years since, I took a PDC with Tia & Terry Meer at the Econ farm. It was yet another life-changing experience and I quickly put these fresh idea to use, experimenting with small permaculture projects in a horribly unsustainable suburban home in Kissimmee, FL while working full time and saving money for another big journey. The projects ranged from a wonderfully successful herb spiral, front-yard polyculture to overtake the st. Augustine grass, and creating compost piles in the backyard.
In the middle of June 2013, I decided to embark on another sojourn, leaving Orlando to assist on a farm in the Appalachian mountains, and then out to the Rocky mountains for two permaculture courses to stretch my knowledge. That leads me to now where I'm currently attending the Earthship Biotecture Academy in Taos, NM, learning how to build and retrofit homes with recycled and reclaimed materials, as well as live completely off the grid and be self-sufficient. I hope to return to Orlando in November with a toolbox of wisdom to share with my community and make the city more self-reliant.
