A temperate creature : design for client #2

Posted by Shane Ward almost 12 years ago

New client, new climate zone - Devon, UK

I had teed this one up before heading to Australia to do my PDC so it had always been at the back of my mind, but I hadn't anticiapted how much my inital thougts would change upon returning for a site visit with more educated eyes and looking at it with my post-PDC knowledge.

An appox 350m² south facing block on the edge of a village in Dartmoor National Park featuring a selection of fruit trees, a vege bed, a chicken house all on a decent slope down towards the house. Cool maritime temperate climate and lots of potential.

The exciting thing abut this proejct is the clients are well up for it and keen to see how much can be reasonably gotten out of their property with the minimal amount of effort and money - spot on for a permie challenge!

After my latest site visit I think I have a decent handle on where it could be taken. It always amazes me how much you can conceivably pack into a space when you really think about it. Even on a block that small we can easily fit zones 1,2 & 4.

So much species research to do as I'm designing for a new climate but that's all part of the journey and I'm looking forwards to slipping on the wellies and getting my hands dirty for this one as well. More to follow.

[UPDATE]

I presented the initial design to the clients and they liked what they saw which is great! Now just need to draw it up in more detail and finesse a few things. There isnt a huge budget for this and implimentation has to be staged to accomodate a new structure being put up and the fact that tight access prevents anything other than what can be carried by hand or wheelbarrow going in. Should be quite productive one up and running though. First thing will be the chickens and zone one vege beds. Fruit trees, small swale and canopy planting for food forest area to come later.

Betty Farnum : How did you 'tee this one up' Shane? And is the consultancy work paid?

Shane Ward : Hi Betty, this one was actually some friends of the family that had said they wanted to be more self sufficient and had some land that was under-utilised. No cash changing hands at this stage, but helping them out and getting more design experience in a temperate climate is reward enough. (PS - Apologies for the delayed response, I wasn't notified when you commented!)

Betty Farnum : Hi Shane no worries. It's the end result that matters. Was the design implemented? And are you back in the UK?
