Permaculture Gold Coast is a growing grass roots, on profit organisation. Our primary focus is action orientated education, and the facilitation of a more resilient and informed community."Volunteerism" and philanthropy are at the base of our efforts.
In 2009 a group of ex-interns and PDC graduates came together to form Gold Coast Permaculture. Since then members have helped establish in conjunction with Gold Coast City Council and members of the public several community gardens. It is expected that by 2020 100 such gardens, which are 1800square meters and have a minimum membership of 40 gardeners will be in operation.
Members of GCP help facilitate the role out of these gardens in a number of ways. Each new garden is assigned a GCP representative and given support to set up as a non profit organisation, given advice on best practice organic gardening and permaculture design, helped to build community and a sense of shared ownership within the gardens via workshops and plant sharing and social fundraising activities.
Time and effort is given by members of GCP in the physical establishment of these gardens as well as ongoing support with horticultural advice.
A peak body was established by Gold Coast Permaculture as a mechanism to share experience, and resources both physical and human between these gardens with the expectation that this would help new gardens share the knowledge of those who had walked the road before them.
The peak body also enables rapid dissemination of information to all relative parties and into the wider community.
These gardens follow a hybrid method of "TOP" down meets "Bottom" up approaches. The community demonstrates its capacity to run and maintain a garden by meeting certain key criteria.
These criteria include commitment to organic gardening, inclusive community involvement, and wider community support from business and other organisations, minimum membership levels and a functioning steering committee that demonstrates good governance practices.
Other endeavours of members of GCP are permablitz and fundraising for worthy permaculture projects around the world. We are also very involved as volunteers in a number of school garden projects on the Gold Coast.
Our most recent project is “270” which is an example of Urban agriculture, bio intensive gardening, bulk waste streaming and community engagement.
270 is a site of nearly 1 acre in the heart of Southport a major commercial area on the Gold Coast.
We work with a number of local state and federal government agencies as well as many local community groups, we have many micro enterprises including honey production, vegetable production, plant and seedling sales, gardening products and education and we also operate a small scale egg production co-op.
Recently we have established the Gold Coasts only privately funded community garden with 20 community gardeners regularly taking home healthy fresh nutrient dense produce.
We are more than happy to share our experience and skills with other communities wishing to pursue similar projects.

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
