A motley crew of us hosted Bill Mollison on his tour of South Africa in 1991 in Cape Town. And it was all systems go after that! After completing the PDC in Zimbabwe in 1993, I worked with Fulvio Grandin in Cape Town as an assistant facilitator on PDCs from 1995. Then ran two community Permaculture gardening projects in the Southern Cape for 5 years whilst living on a smallholding in Hoekwil from 1998 to 2005. Inbetween I landed up doing short courses for Food and Trees for Africa, and local municipalities. I was engaged with land restitution projects as well as a range of community based work. Moved to Berg en Dal in 2006 with my partner Neil Smith, who is an earth builder. Kent Cooper and I run PDCs from the Ecovillage twice yearly, and have started up short internships recently. My work off-farm varied from intensive domestic projects in poor arid areas to assisting SEED with their schools based Permaculture work. I have assisted in developing an accredited Permaculture qualification through the South African Qualifications Authority in partnership with SEED and Leigh Brown. I was privileged to be invited to teach a PDC at Nature's Gift in Lilongwe last year, and should be returning to do so again this year.
My passions are people, plants, edible landscaping, teaching, cooking, propagating, pickling and bottling and creating good resource materials in the written form as well as having good chats with other humans on the same mission. The IPC in Malawi was a highlight for me last year.
An inspiring extended PDC in South Africa
I experimented with getting winter seed in much earlier - with good results
Our wooden slatted classroom has been persistently turned into a hybrid earth building by our building unit, and got a good push recently
We will be putting in a mandala garden just before the winter frosts really get us ..our group of interns will be doing this as part of their Zone 1 practicals..
An excellent 72 hour PDC held at Nature's Gift Permaculture Centre in Lilongwe Malawi. This centre showcases a huge range of Permaculture applications using local resources to their maximum.
