The conversion of a typical suburban house block,toward a more sustainable outlook.Perennial gardens,converted swimming pool,food forest,community hub.
This was a typical suburban house, over the last 4 years my partner and I have transitioned the property towards more sustainable outcomes. We have an emerging food forest(paw paw, mango, biriba, sapote, pepino, Banana with the major support species of pigeon pea, crotolaria ,calliandra,it also contains moringa and bamboo.
We have mixed perennial gardens, with the focus on Taro,Cassava as the main staples.
We have a converted swimming pool that provides fish and food, kang kong, water chestnuts.Fish species are Silver Perch and local natives. The Aquaculture system revolves around a "living" bio filter which consists of several species of reeds, water hyacinth and azzola all of which provide compost for the gardens.
We also have 2 chickens who are hard working members of the family.
We have often hosted visiting groups and Interns from the Permaculture research Institute,Northey Street city farm,Permablitz and Griffith University.
We return the surplus by donating at least 10% of our spare time to community projects such as schools and community gardens. We also hold workshops and donate the proceeds to permaculture projects. We are always happy to provide cuttings of our plants free of charge to those interested in eating nutrient dense, climactic appropriate food.
The house is also a hub for community groups such as Ashmore community gardens,Gold Coast permaculture.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |

Swimming pool to swimming pond.
This is the journey of our swimming pool, from a sad resource sucking pool of polluted water,to a heavily stacked resource rich habitat.
The old front yard.
The old front yard was pretty uninspiring, the new one made us new friends and supplied a great deal of food and endless hours of happy gardening.
