I have been an employee and intern on a few different farms. I decided to take a PDC after trying my own farm project and feeling overwhelmed, over-worked and under-informed. I did a Permaculture and Ecovillage Design Course at Lost Valley Educational Center in Oregon. Following that I apprenticed at an amazing farm in Oregon called SweetWell Farm. The focus of my apprenticeship was learning to work with draft horses.
Currently I am farming my family's three acre urban farm. 2011 will be my second season. I grow fresh cut flowers and sell bouquets at the farmer's market. I am planning on training the baby goats we are expecting in June to work in harness! I also grow some food for my family and neighbors.
Speaking of permaculture: It has been a huge inspiration to me as I navigate and explore my relationship with the land. Also my relationship with my community. My good friend and I started a permaculture guild here and we did it in a very permaculture way. It has taken off and she and I are hardly part of it any more! We vowed only to be involved as long as we were serving it and it was serving us- and that fluctuates.
The light is returning, but we are still in the darkest days. Time to order seeds, review and renew farm plans, gather inspiration...
At the the top of the roller coaster looking ahead into a whole new growing season, yikes!!!
