Kids in Permaculture, A Personal Experience

Posted by Julie Pagliaro about 13 years ago

2010 was a big transition for our family and it has been a pleasure watching our teenage daughter grow, especially in regards to Permaculture...

Our daughter Kelly "unexpectedly" took her PDC in 2008 with Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison at the age of eleven. In the beginning I don't believe she realized the importance of what she had accomplished. Now it makes us proud as parents to see that she is sharing her knowledge by writing permaculture related articles and to watch her in action with the local community, confidently speaking to others on the subject. She is a regular part of the project planning and execution on the farm and has regular duties involving the animals, the garden and more.

I can't encourage people enough to get their kids educated and involved in Permaculture. The future belongs to them!

Vanessa Monge Augusto Fernandes : I do wonder if Kelly is the world's youngest ever recipient of a PDC,she inspired every one at the event tackling the subject seriously and studiously her presentation in the group stage was mature and informed and well beyond her young age, what a credit to you as parents as well for making that incredible journey to Melbourne. Julie Pagliaro : I believe at the time, Geoff said she was his youngest student but Bill told us a story of a girl who was only 9 in a village somewhere where he taught Permaculture. I don't know if she went through a PDC. One of the women following our project has a ten year old who is planning to take a PDC this year. They are out there! Hopefully, some of these young permaculture designers can connect through this network. Julie

Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper
Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper : I couldn't agree more, Julie. My eldest son, Ronan, intentionally took his PDC along with his father this last week in Nevada City. While there was a lot of information well beyond his years there was no way we could stop him from coming along! And he was truly amazing for 10 years old; taking notes and drawings, asking questions, working with the design team. He has hopes now to start a local kids permaculture guild; probably as an offshoot of the local guild our family is involved with. Which sets me to thinking of kids permaculture curriculum... lots to research to do there! I do want to thank you and your family for the inspiration, too! I showed Ronan Kelly's PDC post, a year ago or so, and I know that deeply affected him and his view of himself, as a child still, but a genuinely viable and unique part of our global community. Learn that young, I say!

Julie Pagliaro : Please give Ronan our congratulations! If he would ever like to contact Kelly, I am sure she would be happy to email or talk with him. In my opinion, the most important part of the PDC is the philosophy. I think kids get that. All the rest fills in as they grow up and it really is something to watch. Who knows...maybe someday Kelly and Ronan can teach a PDC together!
