About Pat Simmons

I was born among the Pacific Coastal Redwood forests, a place in northern California where the Pomo people have lived for thousands of years, but was raised from a small keiki within the Hamakualoa region of Maui, Hawai'i. I have always felt a powerful connection with the 'Aina, as an indigenous Human of this oasis of life we call Earth.

I graduated from The Evergreen State College in 2012, receiving a degree in Ecology with strong emphasis on Permaculture and indigenous cultures. I took my first PDC in the Winter of 2010 in Huelo, Maui at the Hale Akua Garden Farm, which was taught by Penny Livingston, Brock Dolman, John Valenzuela, and Kalani Souza, four brilliant kumu. I became deeply inspired by the profound Ecology that is life, and have begun to apply much of what I have learned about Permaculture, being another way to cultivate symbiotic relationships with all beings everywhere.

From October through December 2011, I was part of the 10 week internship program at the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia, a large demonstration site and education center in northern New South Wales, Australia. I am currently in the process of designing and maintaining my family's 10 acre plot of land located in the uplands of Pe'ahi on Maui. I also currently work around Maui designing and installing Permaculture systems, educating and inspiring people around me.
