Here at the Traditional Catholic Homestead we absolutely love comfrey! One of the byproducts ofcomfrey propagation is lots of leaves. Making a comfrey salve is a traditional use for all of those leaves. This healing comfrey salve is just another reason every homesteader should be growing this garden standout. There are many herbs that might be more effective for some of the things we use comfrey for, but none of them are more versatile, perennial and hardy. Add to that how easy it is to propagate comfrey and you start to get the picture of why we like it so much. Comfrey just does so many things so well that you literally can’t go wrong having lots around.
All of our children, as well as my lovely wife, periodically suffer from some sort of skin affliction from minor irritation to full blown flakey, cracked, and bleeding rashes. Needless to say it gets pretty gruesome from time to time! This healing salve is super simple to make and can be used to help heal most minor scrapes, cuts, and burns. A word of caution though: make sure your wounds are cleaned well, and not too deep. The healing power of comfrey can cause the surface of the wound to heal so quickly that any type of infection or deep laceration could be covered over at the surface before they have time to properly cleanse themselves.
Comfrey Salve
Comfrey leaves
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Bees Wax
The first step in creating your salve is to make an herbal infused oil. to do this fill a quart mason jar with chopped comfrey leaves. Pack them in pretty good but not too tight, and leave about an inch of head room. Next pour oil into the jar (We prefer Extra Virgin Olive Oil), enough to cover all of the leaves. Make sure to get all of the air bubbles out and top off the jar with oil. You want to have about a quarter to half inch of oil over the top of the leaves. After that screw a lid on tight and place the jar in a sunny window. Shake the jar several times a day and after about two weeks you will have your completed comfrey infused oil. Strain out the bits and pieces of leaves and there you have it!
After you have your comfrey oil the next step is to melt your wax in a double boiler and add the oil mixing well. You’ll want to use a 3:1 ratio of oil to wax to make an easily applied salve (i.e 3 oz. oil to 1 oz. of wax). To make a more solid balm or bar type lotion up the ratio to 2:1 oil to wax. Once you have the ratio correct and thoroughly mixed pour the slave/balm into your vessel of choice. For the salve we usually will use a wide mouth 4 oz. jelly jar, and for the lotion bar/balm you can use any number of molds or even a mini-cupcake pan. Let the concoction cool to room temperature and you’re ready to go. It really is that simple!
This soothing/healing salve is a must have for every homestead first aid kit!
