A 21st Century Barn-Raising!

Project: The Centre for Urban Agriculture in Alberta

Posted by Rene Michalak almost 11 years ago

The Food Garage is a prototype that produces renewable energy for 4-season food growing to feed a family of 4 for a year... forever!

Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

After winning the Carbon Farmer's first "Face Your Footprint" contest and successfully reaching its crowdfunding goal on WeTheTrees.com, the Food Garage Project has gained some serious attention.

As a spin-off project of ReThink Red Deer, we're now six months into the campaign to build the prototype and we're almost there!

We've raised some eyebrows by challenging the concept of local food, showing how its possible to live a "zero-mile diet" and feed a family of four for a year, forever simply on what can be grown in your back yard.

Inspired by our efforts, The FarmOn Foundation has offered to help raise the funds to build the 26-foot geodesic dome greenhouse and prove what's possible with 4-season food growing in Alberta, Canada.

This is where you come in. We want to leverage our success with WeTheTrees - where we had the most contributors and raised the most funds of any project they've ever hosted - into a campaign with Indiegogo, the international benchmark for crowdfunding!

From July 4 until August 19 we need your contribution to raise the funds that will raise the greenhouse roof! When we're successful, it's going to be a barn-raising like no other and you can help make it happen!

And to thank you for your help, we're compiling over 5 years of research and project experience to show you how you can build your own food garage and edible forest garden.

Check out the new promo video at the campaign page and visit www.FoodGarage.ca for all the finer project details including concept plans and messages from our key supporters.

We want to show you how to turn your garage into a veritable grocery store, so spread the word and sink your teeth into something real!

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
