Permaculture in Kenya and Uganda

Posted by Daniel Parra Hensel about 13 years ago

One full two-week PDC, two designs projects for two orphanages, a visit to Kibera the biggest slum in East Africa and an intensive 4 day shortened PDC. Two countries and one month to pull it off! Here we go!

Our exciting journey to Africa begins in less than one week! On March 4th Warren Brush, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Quail Springs Permaculture, and I will embark on our journey to Kenya and Uganda.

We arrive in Nairobi Kenya on the 6th and get straight to work designing and incorporating permaculture design to Amrita Children's Home site in Nairobi Kenya. Amrita's Center is an orphanage started by Amma, the "Hugging Saint" from India on an 11 acre site on the banks of the Athi River. The center is already home to 108 children providing them with shelter, food, education and healthcare. Ongoing expansions will continue in order to accommodate up to a maximum of 2000 children. This project will be a prototype for many others around the world.

On the 8th of March Warren and I head to the Island of Rusinga on Lake Victoria to teach the two week PDC at Badilisha Eco Village. The Course starts March 9th and runs until March 22nd.

Next we hop on a ferry and head to Southeast Uganda to the Lyantonde District for a 4 day intro to Permaculture intensive being offered to 5 farming cooperatives consisting of mostly women from the surrounding villages.

On the 27th we return to Nairobi Kenya to design a food production system with the locals at Mercy School in the Suba district and pay a visit to Mohamad A. Mohamad, who is a young man that was born and raised in the biggest slum in East Africa. He has been a keystone in the formation of an organization called Youth and Farm Self Help Group. This group is based out of and works in the very heart of the slums of his birth, located in the Kibera District of Nairobi, Kenya.

I look forward to the many wonderful connections and friends we will make and to get to learn from the amazing people of Kenya and Uganda.

with gratitude and ebullience!
