Project Summary

The Klien Karoo Sustainable Dryland Permaculture Projects is a not for profit company based on the farm Berg en Dal. The project focuses on education and training in the field of permaculture. We are located in the Klein Karoo - an arid inland area of South Africa. The entire farm is a living model of Permaculture practice and we offer a range of courses throughout the year, as well as taking in volunteers. We are developing local outreach projects with a range of partners

Project Description

This 400 Ha farm is located in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain range in the Southern Cape. We are a diverse community of residential and non-residential land custodians. Our focus is Permaculture education, and we are growing to offer training in all facest of sustainable living. What we have on site is a number of homesteads that demonstrate different building technologies and land use, as well as broadscale applications of Permaculture, Keyline adaptions and more. At present we offer courses in Spring and Autumn as these are climatically the most comfortable times to host people here. We also take in volunteers, and offer internships.

The ecology of the farm is fascinating and diverse - 4 of the 10 biomes of South Africa can be found here, and we are a quiet and rual space. We have experimented with many approaches to the challenges that arid areas face, with creativity and minimal financial inputs.

We are excited to share our experiences and findngs on this forum, and will be updating as time allows

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
