The Problem/sollution that is Kikuyu

Posted by Byron Joel almost 13 years ago

Techniques for working with/around invasive grasses...

ANybody got any good tips/resource sites for techniques dealing with invasive grasses?

Where i live in Margaret River, Sth Wst Aus, it old dairy country... and there is Kikuyu EVERYWHERE. THose who have worked around Kikuyu before know that its like the Terminator, very hard to isolate and hold back... very opportunistic.

Any tips and tricks on how to work with or around it?

Chemical free please..

Thanks.

Rebekah Copas
Rebekah Copas : As far as I have learned, and heard from others, the only solution for either kikuya or couch, is finding a local competitor, and hard labour. Try lemon grass of course, but the lemon grass needs to be really well established before wide enough lemon grass borders keep the kikuya runners out of an area you keep well weeded of grass by hard work. I guess any plant which, like lemon grass, grows so dense that there is no soil available between its shoots, for the grass runners to set seed in, may work. But if there is any nearby, you will always need to pull it out by hand periodically in gardens where you grow plants which are not as tough at competing.

Claire Coleman : We had good results using weed matting like the black woven plastic stuff in wide rolls. Trick is to keep it moving around - dont plant through it as it comes back over the top and through the holes... depending on the time of year it takes 2-4 months to create a kyke free space to plant into. Trouble can come with seed that is set so we found that we need to maintain annual production for a while and mat it out a few times. Its a tough one for sure especially round here....but reckon this works better than what I have seen with herbicide use.... good luck! Catchya round byron... cc
